Types of Welding Jobs
Welding is a craft that takes some serious talent, patience, and skill. Welding involves applying heat to metal pieces which melt and fuses them, creating a strong bond upon cooling. There are different methods depending on the purpose including maintenance and repair. There is a great importance for welding, anywhere from our vehicles, buildings, pipes, bridges, to toys. With that being said, it is not surprising that welders are employed across a broad range of industries, including construction, car racing, oil and gas, mining, and manufacturing. The Chron came up with a few job fields welders are needed.
Needed Work
Manufacturing
As of May 2011, almost 40,000 welders were employed in the architectural and structural metals manufacturing industry; 20,000 were employed in the agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing sector; and another 13,500 were in the motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing industry.
Construction
Construction welders help create large structural metal parts such as girders on site and often have to work in difficult conditions, including outdoors and on construction platforms high above the ground. It easy to say this job isn’t for everyone.
Industrial Maintenance and Repair
Welders in the commercial and industrial machinery and equipment repair and maintenance industry also sometimes have to work in difficult conditions as they maintain and repair all types of industrial machinery, such as oil rigs. Some maintenance industry welders also have to work late shifts or work on an on-call basis to handle emergency repairs.
Ship and Boat Building
The ship and boat building industry was one of the largest employers of welders in the U.S. in the early and mid-20th century but has slowed down. So only 12,000 welders were employed in the industry as of 2011. Welder-divers are certified scuba divers who have been trained in special techniques for underwater welding. They are typically employed in ship repair and in the oil and gas industry.
