Safety Culture

Safety Culture
Having great safety culture is beneficial to any business. Safety culture is the attitude, perceptions, values, and beliefs that exist and is shared by employees that have to do with safety in the workplace. Ergonomics Plus listed a few ways to tell if you have an awesome safety culture. While they are all important, we listed a few that stuck out to us.

Do You Have It or Not

  • Visible leadership commitment is a big one. Leadership proves their commitment to safety through their actions and how they motivate others to win with their safety initiatives.
  • All employees exhibit a working knowledge of health and safety topics. Basically, they should know their stuff; be competent in safety, know their role and responsibility.
  • The organization should know what they want to achieve. Setting goals, writing them down, know where your company is at. You then make a plan and achieve it. Just know what safety culture you plan to accomplish.
  • Communication on health and safety topics among the company is a must. It’s all about COMMUNICATION! It increases awareness of safety and is transferred to your people to be successful.
  • Instilling a fair and just discipline system for all employees. There are your actions, and there are the consequences. Instituting a fair and just discipline system for safety behaviors is a necessary step to follow through on your claim that safety is important to you.
  • It’s important that managers spend time on the shop floor where the people are. It’s where work gets done and where you can spot problems. Talking with and getting feedback from operators is easier where the action happens. Plus, if you're seen taking initiative on the floor, you’ll be seen as a respected safety leader. Get out there and get your hands dirty.
  • Employees feel comfortable reporting safety issues to their supervisors. You want your employees to feel comfortable reporting any safety issues. They don’t want to be ignored or (even worse) punished for coming forward. It’s best for everyone’s safety that issues are addressed right away.
