Excavators are popular machines that are used in construction and several other civil engineering, according to www.fpp.ie. If you have not guessed, there are several different types of excavators that are used for specific jobs. They come in several shapes, sizes, and functionality, but they basically serve the same purposes. They are used to dig/remove soil from the ground. Excavators consist of parts that work together for soil breaking, crushing, dragging and excavating of soil and rocks.

The best part of ever using an excavator is it makes the job easier and improves efficiency; and are used when conventional tools do not meet the needs.
Their use can be classified as follows:
  • Digging trenches, holes, trenches, rivers or foundation
  • Heavy lifting such as loading waste, holding materials, and other loose debris
  • Mining excavations
  • Driving and/or dragging piles of materials away from or towards a specific place and demolitions.

There are several types of excavators for any job that arises. There are industrial excavators for those heavy duty large-scale jobs and smaller excavators for digging in your backyard. Here are some popular excavators used every day:
  • The most common excavator used today is the back hoe. A back hoe excavator has a bucket facing the driver, and the bucket is attached to a boom and extracts soil by pulling it towards the driver before lifting. This allows the driver/controller to have a clear view of what he is doing.
  • Draglines are used in large-scale applications such as on-surface mining and expansive civil engineering. They can be further divided into on-site and standard mobile draglines. On-site draglines refer to large excavators that are assembled and built on site while standard cranes are generally bigger than back hoes and smaller than on-sites.

There exist other excavator distinctions mainly based on the nature of the function, mechanism of work and machine size. Some common examples include the following: suction excavators, long reach/long arm, crawlers and compact excavators, and power shovels.
