Types of Welding Careers

work.chron.com- Welding is joining metal parts together using torches, this creates a greater bond. The metals are bonded on a molecular level. The welding process has come a long way. Forged welding was the norm until 1886 when resistance welding using electrodes was invented. Forged welding is the hammering of two pieces of hot metal until they fuse together. With other methods of welding being developed, along with the technology, types of welders had also expanded. Here are a few types of jobs that are highly specialized.
Of course, there are the welders. You can see them in the manufacturing and construction industries and are over 100 different welding processes for specific applications. Some welders are certified in more than one technique; stick welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding. They may lay pipelines and work to build and maintain power plants and refineries.

Welding machine operators weld with machines instead of welding by hand. This profession is in high demand. They have a knowledge of various welding techniques and how to operate industrial welding equipment. They are typically employed at large manufacturing companies.

Solderers and brazers use a lower temperature to join pieces of metal together, so only added metal is melted not the pieces themselves. Brazing is seen in plumbing and construction applications. It used to give parts coatings to reduce wear and prevent corrosion. Soldering is used in manufacturing processes such as producing electronic circuit boards

Cutters work by hand. They use arc torches, plasma, and oxy-gas welding cutter that divide metal into pieces to a certain size. Some work as cutting machine operators dismantling large metal objects (cars, ships, aircraft's) and reusing them as scrap.

Welders and others in similar positions earned a median salary of $35,450 a year in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job prospects for welders are expected to be slightly better than the U.S. average, with 15 percent job growth projected between 2010 and 2020.
