Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation
Polycote- Surfaces require different types of methods of preparation. It is a vital element when achieving a quality surface. Some surfaces may require nothing more than having the dust brushed away, while others may require elaborate surface preparation procedures. No matter how you prepare it, you need the right equipment and materials to ensure the durability of the surface.

Preparation Methods

The surface should be cleaned of dust, oil, dirt, and dust. When it is ready, there are several ways, methods, and types of equipment to prep the surface. The basic method used is broom/vacuum cleaning, it removes all surface dust, dirt, and other loose material. Chemical cleaning such as acid etching is low cost, and it basically dissolves the weak surface layer known as laitance and opens the pores to allow penetration of the sealer coat. You can use Polycote Etch IT which is a concentrated Hydrochloric Acid and should be diluted with water. If you want to use a little old fashioned elbow grease, sanding and wire brushing is another way to prep surfaces. Mechanical cleaning adds the advantage of speed, but too much prepping in this way can damage the floor. Power grinding, sanding or scraping are speedy ways to get the job done. Shot blasting is the same objective as acid etching, the blast removes all form release agents, weak concrete, laitance, dirt, and contamination. Hand held and high-speed diamond grinders are powerful enough for almost any demanding industrial requirement. Hand held grinders and big ride-on machines can all be connected to industrial dust recovery units. This, in turn, means that we can achieve a 95% dust free operation. Diamond grinding smooths the surface removing minor pits and divots, high spots and roughness on concrete floors. Keep in mind, with any equipment or chemical solutions, be sure you follow all manufacturer’s instructions and recommended safety procedures.
